about Sri Toys

Design, Finish and Safety

Sri Toys International Pvt. Ltd. is a Sri Lanka based manufacturer and exporter of wooden educational puzzles, play sets and play furniture. Our team of designers, headed by a Dutch product developer, uniquely designs all products.

All our wooden toys, puzzles and play furniture are handcrafted from best quality, plantation grown rubberwood. This wood is produced without the use of fungicides or pesticides, making it an environmentally sound raw material. It is of a medium density and does not splinter, making it eminently suitable for high quality toys.

The surface of the products is covered with three layers of lacquer and paint after sanding. All the paints used to produce our high quality finish are non-toxic. The end products are smooth, glossy and easy to clean, making them extremely child-friendly.

All products conform to current European and U.S.A. toy safety regulations.

Materials

All over the western slopes of Sri Lanka's hill country there are vast plantations of rubber trees. Each day the trunks are slit to allow the rubber sap to run down into coconut bowls, which are emptied each night. The trees can only sustain production of sap for between 5 and 25 years so young trees are being constantly planted.

When the yield of sap from the matured trees diminishes, they are removed and converted into timber.

There is a limit to the width of planks that can be produced; rubber trees are diametrically challenged. Some of our designs require the use of extra wide timbers and these components are usually manufactured from formaldehyde free MDF.

Manufacturing Process

After being sawn into planks the wood is impregnated with borax salt, (a non- toxic material), to improve its durability and its resistance to fungus attack.

The planks are then kiln dried for 10 days, moisture content being monitored constantly. The wood is then checked for quality and the best pieces are sent to the workshop for further machining. The finished plank is a beautiful light, natural colour with a very interesting grain structure that is suitable for all kinds of machining as well as handcrafting.

Rubber Wood

All Sri Toys puzzles are made of quality rubber wood. Rubber wood is an environmentally sound raw material, grown in Sri Lanka's many rubber plantations. After about 20 years the trees are cut down and replanted. Traditionally the wood was burned to cure tea, but now its real value has been discovered.
